BIOGRAPHY

Described as a particular act placed at the intersection between the aggressive styles and the harmonious and dramatic approaches, the avant-garde dark metal band Bloodway was born in July 2013 out of the ideas held by three Romanian musicians, namely Costin Chioreanu (guitar and vocals), Alex Ghita (drums) and Mihai Andrei (bass). They merged their past musical experiences by challenging themselves to get beyond new borders of creativeness in order to shape a special group using an extremely coherent musical language. In their own senses, the name “Bloodway” means the experiences and paths that someone can achieve and discover during a lifetime.

At first, the band didn’t publish anything about its existence and any updates regarding their creative progress. The reason why they didn’t reveal anything from the very first start was their desire to present the world the result of their art exclusively without relying on today’s social aspects emerging from the status of being in a band. “We were totally focused on developing what we wanted to build together, so we just locked ourselves in the cell and kept everything away from the world outside. Our main goal was first to find our own path and to record a debut material and have it as concentrated as possible. We simply left outside the door any possible influence coming from the people around us,” Costin Chioreanu explained. “Even our closest friends had zero information about our existence as a band until one point… But that’s what our purpose demanded precisely,” he added.

On September 2013, Bloodway recorded a live demo and sent it to a single label. That was I, Voidhanger Records from Italy, which signed the band on the spot. Two months later, Bloodway went to Next Dog Studio in Romania together with producer Marius Costache and thus they gave birth to their debut record “Sunstone Voyager and the Clandestine Horizon” under the shape of an E.P. with 5 songs.

The first Bloodway’s official video came out on the 17th of February 2014 as a dark avant-garde animation covering the “Free Ends” track.

Bloodway’s debut EP can be purchased as a jewel case edition with a 16-page booklet [http://www.i-voidhanger.com/mailorder.htm] and digital version as well [http://bloodway.bandcamp.com/]. The visual story illustrating the CD’s booklet became the core of a graphic exhibition presented by Costin Chioreanu named “Clandestine Horizons”, which opened on the 7th of March 2014 at the Santeria Gallery, in Milano, Italy.

A couple of months after the launch and “Sunstone Voyager and the Clandestine Horizon” gets positive reviews from renowned publications such as Zero Tolerance, Metal Hammer or Rock Hard and various online magazines. The record was provided with great distribution and reached the shops in Europe, Japan, The U.S. and Mexico.

During 2014, Bloodway was invited to play at few local festivals, Metalhead Meeting, November to Dismember and Rockstadt Extreme Fest, the later bringing them the unique opportunity to have two concerts during a single edition given the fair number of people who missed the first show due to the festival’s schedule changing and wanted to catch the band.

After the show at the November to Dismember Festival in 2014, the band took a break from live activities and focused on finishing new material.
They went to the same studio and worked with the same Marius Costache on recordings, mixing and mastering. The new record was a full-length which got physically released on September 2015 during a Romanian tour, which went by the name “Horrors of the Unknown”. German trio Valborg joined Bloodway in this tour and they hit the stages in a few Romanian cities, namely Bucharest, Cluj, R?mnicu, Constanta and Craiova.

Released on CD, the new album named “Mapping the Moment with the logic of Dreams” was produced by the same Italian label I,Voidhanger Records and got worldwide distributed.

In 2015 Bloodway was invited again to play at some local festivals such as Metalhead Meeting and Rockomotiva Festival, the later one being noted for a special featuring, in which guitarist Rune Eriksen (Blasphemer – Aura Noir, ex-Mayhem), who was there for a show with his Twilight of The Gods, joined the Romanian group on stage and played the “Free Ends” song. Another special show, which took place during the same year was the one in Question Mark, Bucharest, known as “Escape From the Studio Show”, when the band intertwined its live music with scenes from “On the Silver Globe”, the masterpiece of Polish director Andrzej Zulawski and the apprehensions of British philosopher Alan Watts. The same event was the host for the Romanian release of Costin Chioreanu’s art book, “Magic as a Golden Mean”.

After the horrific consequences of the Colectiv nightclub fire which killed more than 60 people and left more than 100 severely injured in October 2015, the Romanian metal scene experienced a state of shock. Bloodway postponed all activities including rehearsing and only in December the band rescored and recorded a version of the “Garden of Diurnal Fractals” track, taken from the “Mapping the Moment with the logic of Dreams” album. This became a fully instrumental song and was created as a practice of mental therapy, since the band needed such process in order to learn how to cope with the overwhelming situation and start creating again. However, the band’s official statements didn’t present this song as a creation meant to express something related to the consequences of the tragic loss, thus the experience and its goals were hidden from view.

In January 2016, Bloodway and Valborg met again since the German group was in Bucharest for a show, and both bands went to Marius Costache’s studio in order to compose and record together the “Karbon Winter” song. The decision of coming with such collaboration came after both bands realized that a certain type of friendship got established in between once with the tour in Romania which took place in the Fall of 2015. A couple of months later, the guitarists in each band composed and record another song, the instrumental “Ashes” and this way, both groups came with a digital E.P., which cannot be taken as a split given that both bands contributed in both pieces.

The comeback concert of Bloodway happened in May 2016 in Bucharest when the band opened for the Norwegian black thrash entity Aura Noir. The next one was a special performance called “The Iron Temple”, a show split in three acts, each of them separated by two narrative parts recorded by Tomas Lindberg (At the Gates) and Mat McNerney (Hexvessel, Grave Pleasures) and an interlude by Carmen Simoes (Earth Electric, Moonspell) who recorded a stream of choral voices. “The Iron Temple” was set in Control Club, Bucharest on the 21st of September 2016 and was based on the stage design created by Andrei Tudorache who imagined and manually built some nightmarish figures of iron pieces that resembled the surreal aesthetic in the Bloodway’s dimension. This show made also a great occasion for the band to release the two records created so far on a limited cassette edition produced by Blood & Fire Productions.

Valborg joined Bloodway again and they made a short tour called “Otherworlds Over Éire” in Ireland on October 2016 and they played in Dublin, then at the Distortion Festival in Belfast and the Siege of Limerick festival.

The first concert in 2017 was held in Bucharest at the Fabrica Club on the 19th of January and went under the name “When we are in tune with ourselves we have everything”. This time Bloodway shared the stage with Romanian instrumental group Valerinne. This show marks the last moment in a cycle of Bloodway’s existence prior to the release of a new material which is in the making.
